Matt Stokes employs a variety of media – including video, sound, photography and performance – that predominantly proceed to form installations and interventions that inventively engage with their locations. Often, his work directly invites public involvement, such as Roll-in’ Along (2000), where a video of a lone chorister’s karaoke-style interpretation of the song Wand’rin’ Star was projected in various city centres, inviting late-night revellers to join in. A graduate of the University of Newcastle, projects in 2002 included residencies at Grizedale Arts, Cumbria, and Kielder Water, Northumberland. For ‘Memento’, he produced a compilation of karaoke singers from central Newcastle pubs that was broadcast over the public address system at stations on the Tyne & Wear Metro system over five days (10-14 July 2002).
