Brigitte Jurack’s two-part work, After all they decided their own eyes would be sufficient during day and night, describes the power of the senses on the development of the mind. Within the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, no other place is as densely covered by billboards as the area around St James Metro station and the sprawling car parks that surround it. In this noisy and almost permanently shifting non-space, an orange-gold glow dominates the vast surface of one billboard. A narrow and solitary ice-covered path drifts and disappears in the glow.

The second part of the work is a postcard stacked in racks near the exit of pubs, libraries, galleries and foyers of other public buildings throughout the city, awaiting its destination – to be determined by those who pick it up, take it home in their pocket, tape it to their wall or pass it on. On one side is the image of a pierced, slightly overcast sky, on the reverse it reads ‘In the early hours of the morning they got out the hoods, climbed up at every location and dressed the one eyed and sometimes two eyed slowly rotating heads’.
