Drawing Room Madrid
15 May – 15 June 2021
Vane is pleased to announce the gallery’s participation in the online section of the Drawing Room Madrid art fair, 15 May – 15 June 2021, showcasing the work of Feliks Culpa.
Feliks Culpa’s work revels in temporal, transient morality, the volatility of materiality and the market. Drawn with crude oil, the ‘Volatile Stock’ series surveys the price of everything and the value of nothing, creating a decaying portrait of unsustainable industries and endangered species including actors, activists, politicians, oil barons and oligarchs.
Including depictions of George W Bush halted mid-sentence, Jack Nicholson as a screaming rigger, former Saudi Deputy Oil Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, the baron of data mining, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of BP, Bernard Looney, and environmental activist Greta Thunberg, Volatile Stock is a divisive exploration of the sweet and the sour drawn from the well of humankind.
Feliks Culpa was born Martin McAloon in County Durham in 1962 and lives in Newcastle upon Tyne. A founding member of acclaimed English band Prefab Sprout, McAloon recorded and released albums internationally, touring extensively. McAloon considers Feliks Culpa a solo band and his art as demo tapes. His solo exhibition, ‘The Ongoing Moment’, was at Vane in 2019. He exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Show, London and at the British Musical Experience, Liverpool in 2020. Culpa’s work is currently in the ‘BALTIC Open Submission’ exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead until 5 September 2021.
In addition, Vane is showing work by ten artists on the Drawing Room Store: Feliks Culpa, Kerstin Drechsel, Jorn Ebner, Nick Fox, Simon Le Ruez, Jock Mooney, Michael Mulvihill, Stephen Palmer, Morten Schelde, and Matthew Smith.
