The Late Shows 10
Saturday 14 May 2016, 7-11pm
For The Late Shows evening Vane is pleased to present a special event to accompany the exhibition, ‘Vinyl Icons: Persian Pop and Turkish Psychedelia’. Visitors are invited to a 1960s and ’70s vintage style consultation resulting in a Polaroid photograph by acclaimed international photographer Cyrus Mahboubian.
The exhibition is a unique presentation of art inspired by the popular music of pre-revolutionary Iran and Anatolia and makes a clear connection between 1960s and 1970s Iranian culture and contemporary visual art from the Iranian diaspora.
In addition, The Late Shows evening sees the preview reception for our two new exhibitions, ‘ Transparent Things’ and ‘Seeing a Who’.
The Late Shows at Commercial Union House
These are just three of many projects for The Late Shows taking place in Commercial Union House. Come and experience a diverse world of creative talent, all based in the same building.
Ground Floor: Globe Gallery
Globe’s interactive installation The Blossom Tree is back this year, inviting visitors to fashion flowers out of their own secret messages on a brand new theme: ‘What Comes After?’ Approaching the sensitive subject of death with curiosity, levity and optimism, we aim to encourage reflection on our coinciding exhibition: the third and final instalment of Gareth Hudson’s series, ‘Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt’.
Floor 2: The HUB Studio @ Arcadea
The Midnight Garden of Beasts. Join us at the HUB / ICEBOX and catch a glimpse of our extremely rare collection of fantastical ‘flora and fauna’ most of which only makes an appearance at night-time. Grab a free cuppa, pick up a souvenir in the gift shop or visit the Custodian’s lounge and test your skill on the massive four lane Scalextric set.
Floor 3: B&D Studios
In our main area, 586 Records are hosting the Silent Disco, supplying your earphones with the vibes. In our gallery space we have the awesome Luke Dixon, illustrator and director of The BEARHUG (Co) Ltd. And all our lovely B&D members will be doing open studios.
Floor 4: Ampersand Inventions
Ground Control to Major Tim – Ampersand Inventions invites you to Mission Control for a stellar evening of creativity and curiosities. Celebrate Tim Peake’s mission on the ISS with the bright stars of Ampersand, collaborators Maker Space and Praxis Gallery. Enjoy mesmerizing demonstrations, kaleidoscopic cocktails, outer-space TED talks and mini lectures.
Floor 6: Space Six
Space Six is an artist led work and rehearsal space full of some of the North East’s finest theatre companies, dance artists, producers, singers and storytellers. We invite you to put on your dancing shoes and join the party, help us uncover secret stories and find hidden performances in unexpected spaces. We also have a subsidised bar and an accessible and inclusive sensory area.
Presented as part of The Late Shows 10.
The Late Shows is supported by Port of Tyne and co-ordinated by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums in association with Museums at Night, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, BALTIC, Northern Print, Mushroom Works, Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council and Arts Council England.
