The Late Shows 2018, DRAWING Workshops

LateShowsBadgeWeb.jpg

Saturday 19 May 2018, 7-11pm

For The Late Shows visitors, DRAWING presents two drop-in workshops at Vane. Choose from a selection of existing ‘secret dot to dot’ drawings or make your own inspired by Rachael Clewlow’s solo show at the gallery, ‘3,200 Colours’, which will also be open on the night. You can also create a drawing and pop into the Drawing Prize Booth to have your photograph taken. The Drawing Prize Booth is inspired by the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition opening at Vane on Friday 25 May.

Saturday evening will also be the last opportunity to see the current exhibition by Rachel Clewlow, ‘3,200 Colours’. Clewlow’s paintings are rigorous and detailed recordings of her everyday movements. They focus on specific pre-defined walks representing a performative journey made to explore location.

The Late Shows at Commercial Union House
Come and experience a diverse world of creative talent, all based in the same building.

Ground Floor: Globe Gallery
Globe Gallery will be bringing all the fun of the fair with Leisurelands featuring Robert Soden’s series of watercolours depicting fairgrounds, circuses and of course ‘The Hoppings’. Globe Gallery will recreate the wonderful atmosphere of the fair with toffee apples, popcorn, candyfloss and fairground games. Robert Soden’s work will be complimented by a ‘Punch and Judy’ style animation of political figures, by artist, Amy Whitfield. Her unique and increasingly popular LikeToys characters include fashion designers, pop stars and politicians. Fun for all, prizes to be won and the sweet tooth catered for.

Floor 1: Incubate Experimental Printmaking
Incubate will be turning on its UltraViolet blacklights for the evening, in order to give you a better look at what has been growing and changing in this experimental ecosystem over the past year. Have a go at printing some glow in the dark art for yourself, while seeing some of the art that has been made here by newcomers and printmaking veterans. There will be the opportunity to learn how to get involved in the workshop, through classes, personal tuition and artistic collaboration, in a wide range of printmaking processes. Incubate will be celebrating its first year of opening.

Floor 2: The HUB @ Arcadea
Feminists Unite! Join the fight for Women’s Suffrage as Arcadea mark 100 years of women winning the vote. Grab a placard, or maybe just a cup of tea in our protest room and enjoy the soundscapes & sights. Fancy yourself as a Pankhurst? Dress up for a selfie as a protester, getting arrested, or even behind bars. Race to the victory room and celebrate with a spin around the four lane Scalextric track that marks the moment the vote was won. Presented by the HUB, a cultural project for learning disabled adults and ICEbox, a creative space for disabled young people.

Floor 2: TURF @ Good Space
Not The Royal Wedding Tea Party – Join the surreal super residents of TURF to kick back with some tea, cake and some mad hatter magic. Visit TURF in their colourful space for fun and convivial conversation. Tuxedoes and tiaras optional but applauded! One hopes to be highly amused.

Floor 3: B&D Studios
Come to B&D Studios to see their fantastic new show - ‘Northern Lines’ by Jack Coates. You can also meet the members, and take a look round their open studios.

Floor 4: Ampersand Inventions
Homage to The Handyside Arcade: The New Breed. The Edwardian-built arcade on the city’s Percy Street was a spectacular glass-roofed construction housing a range of popular quirky shops and outlets ‘Tyneside’s answer to Carnaby Street’. From the dust of legends, Ampersand Inventions are opening their doors to showcase their amazing boutiques, shops and not forgetting their weird and wonky artists! Mixing heritage, culture, lifelong learning, innovation and enterprise!

Floor 6: Space Six
An eclectic mix of live music, performance and drop in workshops showcasing the work many of their members produce and develop in the space. Try your hand at clowning, puppet making and operating, learn a new dance practice or have a beer and meet some of the resident artists in their networking hub.

Presented as part of The Late Shows
During The Late Shows, museums, galleries, studio collectives and landmark historical buildings come together to offer visitors one-off events including hands-on workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, performances and parties. It's all about encouraging people to do something cultural with their evening in celebration of the national event Museums at Night.
