As an arrival and departure point for the city, Central Station contains many maps and other information for its users. Newcastle City Council planting containers are a familiar sight around the city centre, intended to make public spaces more attractive. It might not be so unexpected to find one of these in the station concourse, but on closer inspection the greenery in this one particular planting container reveals itself to be a miniature map, one that subtly reflects the redevelopment of the area surrounding Central Station: the roads shown as hedges and trees, the buildings as fields.
