Joe Devlin, Standard system to mark textbooks (detail), 2003, drawings, table and chairs

Joe Devlin’s work is not so much a series of drawings, as a record of other people’s involvement in a text. He redraws the underlining, bracketing and other marks made by various readers on the pages of library books. The artist faithfully reproduces the total recorded marks in an individual book on a single sheet of A4 paper. The original text is absent and remains unknown to us. Displayed on a table with seats, what is left is a series of seemingly abstract drawings that represent a multiple readers’ view of the single author’s world.
