Mark Briggs

Mark Briggs, Action Adventure, 2003, projection

Mark Briggs projects a comic book cliché against the wall. In Action Adventure, the flickering strobe light of the word ‘arrhhh’ is literally a silent scream animated, charging the image with both urgency and a sense of the absurd. Briggs is fascinated with words used in comics that express both the sound of a violent incident alongside its immediate recognition. The comic book ‘shock tactics’ are made redundant and replaced by the continuing ‘awe’ of the work’s visual repetition – the physical mechanics of their representation seeking to question their familiarity.
