The first ever Vane project, ‘Vane97’, was initiated by a group of artists based in the north east of England with the intention of holding four annual visual arts events, culminating in the year 2000. It consisted of almost fifty artists in thirteen projects, including exhibitions at existing gallery venues Waygood Gallery, Newcastle Arts Centre, The Buddle Arts Centre (Wallsend), as well as vacant buildings, shop windows and other public interventions as well as three open studio events.
David Butler gives background to ‘Vane97’ and a history of the first three years of Vane.
