Zip performance event

Postgraduate artists from the BxNU Master of Fine Art course at Northumbria University in Newcastle are presenting a closing event for their current exhibition at Vane, ‘Zip’, on Friday 15 February 7-9pm. The evening will consist of performances by Siân Hutchings, Ciara Ní Léanacháin, and Holly Standen.


Archive screening: There is Power in the Material

Thursday 6 December 2018, 6-8pm

To coincide with the Juliet Fleming’s and Sarah-Joy Ford’s exhibition of collaborative work, ‘Hard Craft’, There is Power in the Material is a screening of feminist film and video from the Cinenova collection. The moving image works explore the politics of domestic spaces and highlight the use of craft media within feminist and queer protest movements.

Olisa .L. Osanakpo: DRPPSM

DRPPSM (pronounced DRIPPISM) is something the artist describes as akin to an artist’s statement, a statement of intent and of personal style and expression, a concept influenced by historical art movements such as De Stijl amongst others. The culmination of a year’s work, the work is a 22-minute film of 11 scenes and soundless – a conceptual device designed to engage a visceral and reflective experience from the viewer.

Jorn Ebner’s soundscape for Karen Irmer’s video installation, ‘Wandeln’, is being performed at Moritzkirche, Augsburg, Germany, 4:30pm, Sunday 28 October 2018.


Helen Schell: Spectrum Symposium

‘Spectrum’ is a half-day symposium bringing together scientists, artists, and students to examine the future of human space exploration and long-term space living. The symposium will include a discussion about plans for ‘2019 – Year of Space at Centre for Life and beyond’, in the north east of England.


The Manchester Contemporary 2018

Vane is pleased to be participating in The Manchester Contemporary. This year’s presentation includes both artists represented by the gallery and from neighbouring initiatives, Ampersand Inventions and B&D Studios, both based in Commercial Union House, home to the largest concentration of artists and creative organisations in Newcastle upon Tyne. Artists showing are Ben Applegarth, Feliks Culpa, Nancy Isherwood, Jonpaul Kirvan, Melanie Kyles, Jock Mooney, and Narbi Price.


Oliver Doe: Trace Your Fingers Over The Edges Of Me

Book Launch: Saturday 29 September 2018, 5-8pm

Trace Your Fingers Over The Edges Of Me
collects sixty poems from the last two years by artist-curator and writer Oliver Doe. The book represents his first full-length collection, having previously published two smaller books and a number of pamphlets. The work in Trace Your Fingers Over The Edges Of Me explores sexuality, gender, relationships and the body, with poems that are intensely personal, autobiographical, and intimate. The book will be available to purchase at the event for £8.


Mani Kambo: Collage workshop

To coincide with her solo exhibition at Vane, ‘RIFT’, Mani Kambo will host a workshop inspired by the Surreal and dreams. Merge images and words together to create your own collage. All materials are provided but feel free to bring your own images to work with.
